Transius Symposium 2023: Working together to develop historical perspectives on institutional translation

On 15 September 2023, the Transius Centre hosted a symposium that brought together specialists on the history of institutional translation. The seven presentations focused on various periods, places and topics. During the lively debates that followed, both speakers and participants shared their views on the development of this field of research.

The programme covered four main topics: the typology of institutional contexts, the relationship between institutional translation and power in modern states, the level of and path to professionalization of institutional translation, and the archives, corpora and catalogues used for research.

Over 70 participants joined the symposium on-site and online. The audience comprised both scholars of the history of translation and of legal and institutional translation, and practitioners, highlighting the large appeal of the event.

The Transius Symposium 2023 was convened by Valérie DULLION (Transius Centre) and Reine MEYLAERTS (Research Group on Translation and Intercultural Transfer, KU Leuven) as part of the "Places of Translation" project, with the financial support of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
