PhD position in Translation Studies at the Transius Centre
JOB DESCRIPTION
As part of a Weave project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Transius Centre (Department of Translation, Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, University of Geneva) has an opening for a PhD candidate in Translation Studies. The research project is entitled ‘Places of Translation: A Comparative Study of the Emergence of Local Translation Policies in Belgium and Switzerland (1830/1848-1918)’.
You will conduct a comparative study of translation policies in several Swiss cities in the 19th century, based on legal and administrative documents that you will collect from the archives of public institutions. You will use digital tools to apply qualitative content analysis and corpus analysis methods. You will work in parallel with another PhD student, who will be employed by the Research Group Translation and Intercultural Transfer (Research Unit Translation Studies, Faculty of Arts, KU Leuven) to work on the Belgian part of the project (funded by the Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Vlaanderen – FWO).
You will complete a PhD thesis, write academic articles and present your research at conferences. You will contribute to the work of the research team and the activities of the Transius Centre, including developing a documentary database for the project and organizing scholarly meetings.
You will work under the supervision of Prof. Valérie Dullion (University of Geneva), in collaboration with the project partner Prof. Reine Meylaerts (KU Leuven). The thesis will be awarded jointly by both institutions with a cotutelle agreement.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
You have a master’s degree or equivalent:
- in translation
or
- in a related field (e.g. linguistics, history, literature, digital humanities, law, political science), with some knowledge of translation/translation studies and a focus that is relevant to the themes or methods of the project.
You have the ability to work in French and English. You can read German fluently. The thesis may be written in French, English or German, depending on your preference.
Your academic record (e.g. the quality of your master’s thesis) demonstrates your aptitude and interest in research work. You have good oral and written communication skills. You are able to work both in a team and independently. You are willing to spend a year at KU Leuven (a research stay is planned during the fellowship).
You are proficient with standard IT tools.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
You will carry out your PhD as part of an international research project, facilitating your integration into the academic community. You will complete your theoretical and methodological training at the doctoral schools of the two partner institutions (ReMeTIS at the University of Geneva and CETRA at KU Leuven), both members of the International Doctorate in Translation Studies network.
You will benefit from the welcome, information and support services provided by the Graduate Campus of the University of Geneva.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The position is open at a rate of 70% for a maximum period of four years. It is remunerated in accordance with the salary range for doctoral students in SNSF-funded projects.
